Joshua Hyde is an Australian saxophonist based in Paris. An active performer of new music, he is co-artistic director and saxophonist of Paris based new music ensemble soundinitiative, performs in a trio with Noam Bierstone (percussion) and Antoine Alerini (piano), is a member of the Module saxophone quartet and plays regularly with ensemble musikFabrik in Cologne.
Joshua works regularly with young and established composers from Europe, North and South America, Australia and South-East Asia including Liza Lim, Chris Swithinbank, Joanna Bailie, Emily Howard, Matthew Sergeant, Mauricio Pauly, Chris Dench, Hector Parra, François Rossé, Georges Aperghis, Samuel Andreyev, Bernard Lee Kah Hong, Tania Lanfer, and Colin Tucker to create and premiere new music including performances at the Holland Festival (Amsterdam), Ars Musica (Brussels), Festival Sons d'Automne (Annecy), Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik in Darmstadt (Germany), for the series Musique d’Aujourd’hui sur Scène and Rendez-vous Contemporains (Paris), and for Nonclassical’s the First Movement in Paris. He can be heard on ABC Classic FM and 3MBS in Australia, Radio WDR in Germany and RTBF in Belgium.
He has performed as a soloist with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, the Victorian College of the Arts Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, with Ben Carey (electronics) as a featured artist at the IRCAM Forum at the Gaîté Lyrique in Paris, and is regularly invited to perform in Asia as soloist with the Amigo Saxophone Quartet with whom he has toured Singapore, Macao, Thailand, Hong Kong and Malaysia.
As an educator he has been invited as a guest lecturer by the University of Melbourne, the Victorian College of the Arts, the University of Manchester, the University of Leeds, the Junior RNCM (Manchester), Kasetsart University (Bangkok), and has been guest artist at the inaugural Singapore Saxophone Symposium and the 4th Scandinavian Saxophone Festival.
After completing a Bachelor of Music with honours at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, Joshua continued his studies in France with Marie-Bernadette Charrier (CNR de Bordeaux, Prix de Perfectionnement) Vincent David (CNR de Versailles, Prix de Perfectionnement) and in 2012 he was accepted into the Paris Conservatoire (CNSM) to complete a masters with international soloist Claude Delangle as the first Australian saxophonist to study in this prestigious class.
He has been the recipient of numerous prizes and awards including the Weril National Student Award and the Nickson, Willem van Otterloo and Welsford Smithers Travelling Scholarships, in 2010 he was the winner of the 5th International Saxophone Competition in Nantes (France), and in 2011 was awarded the 1st prize and audience prize at the prestigious 3rd International Jean-Marie Londeix International Saxophone competition in Bangkok.
Joshua is a Selmer Paris and d'Addario Woodwinds artist.
